Fighting a Cold While Pregnant: Your Three Biggest Allies

September 28, 2012

Cold and flu season is approaching, and if you’re pregnant, we advise you to take as many precautions as possible in order to stay healthy this year. Your doctor, undoubtedly, has ordered you to get a flu shot this fall. And to ward off the common cold, your best bet is to diligently wash your hands and stay away from sneezes and coughs around the office and in crowded shops and restaurants. But if you do find yourself with a cold this season, you’ll discover that many over the counter cold remedies are off-limits during pregnancy. Here are your three biggest weapons against the misery of the pregnancy cold.

Fluids. Of course, you’ll want to keep up your fluid intake in the form of water, juice, and herbal teas. A bit of honey in your lemon or ginger tea can be very soothing. But hydration and moisture come in many different forms. A hot shower or bath with a few drops of eucalyptus oil can help to ease congested sinuses, due to the steam and the anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties of eucalyptus. And you may want to purchase a neti pot or a sterilized saline nasal spray at the pharmacy. A mix of salt and water in a neti pot or a saline rinse can clear debris from your sinuses and help to soothe inflamed membranes.

Sleep. Yes, you’re a busy person. You have work and you may have older children to take care of. You like to wake up early to run errands or catch up on emails. But this a great time to ask your partner to make breakfast for your toddler and call in “late” to work. Getting a full eight hours of sleep can shorten the duration of your cold and ease some of the aches and fatigue your virus brings with it.

Your doctor. During your pregnancy, you’ve been warned to take as little medicine as possible. But your doctor may have some specific brands or formulations to recommend that are a bit more safe during pregnancy. Give your doctor’s office a quick phone call for a bit of cold-fighting advice.

We hope you don’t catch a cold this season, but if you do, remember that you need to prioritize your health and wellness during your pregnancy. Rely on your support system at home and at work, and make sure you treat yourself to as much rest and as many safe remedies as possible.

Great blog, Raeanne. Of course Mom, the #1 priority is to keep your immune system in top-notch condition by getting all the rest you can, taking your pre-natal vitamins daily and following a nutitious dietary regimen. This should keep those nasty cold germs at bay for the most part. Gettting the flu shot is so important. Glad you wrote that. And if a cold still get’s to you Mom, remember, ease up and soothe yourself by knowing it will most likely run a 2-week course.
    Have a healthy …..
