Five Things to Do When You’ve Just Found Out that You’re Expecting!

November 19, 2012

You’ve taken a pregnancy test or five, you’ve told your partner in excitement, and you’ve possibly started to feel a little nauseous. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Before you register for crib sheets and diaper genies, there are a few immediate measures you’ll want to take as you embark on this new journey.

1. Call your doctor. Unless you are a high-risk pregnancy, some doctors may not have you come in until you are eight to ten weeks along. But make the phone call, and get an appointment on the books. If you don’t have an obstetrician, ask your primary care doctor for a referral to someone she feels will be a good fit for you. You can also ask friends for recommendations.

2. Start taking prenatal vitamins. Some women start taking prenatal vitamins when they are trying to conceive, but if you haven’t been taking them, now is the time to ask your doctor for a prescription, or to choose a brand from your drugstore. Look for formulations with at least 400 mcg of folic acid, which is essential in the first trimester.

3. Figure out who you will tell, and when. The first trimester is a tricky time, because while you may want to shout your news from the rooftops, it may be advisable to tell only close family and friends until your second trimester, when your miscarriage rate drops. Make sure you and your partner are on the same page regarding when to break the news, and who to tell.

4. Buy a book! We’d caution you not to go overboard on pregnancy reading (and certainly to refrain from excessive pregnancy googling)! But buying a reliable manual is a great idea. What to Expect When You’re Expecting is a classic, and very informative. Your Pregnancy Week by Week is great for women who want to track their pregnancy down to the date. And The Baby Nurse Bible offers a comprehensive view on pregnancy, birth and newborn care.

5. Plan a getaway. This news is very overwhelming, and very private. You and your partner might benefit from a weekend away to digest the news and do a little celebrating.

You’re off to a great start! Now is a nice time to let everything sink in, educate yourself on pregnancy health basics, and share your news with the people closest to you. Enjoy this time, because things are about to get very busy!
